Trauma?: It's most probably from either chemical trauma through hypersensitivity to certain foods or meds. , or mechanical trauma like rubbing or in constant contact with sharp edges of dental appliances for example . Have your dentist check it out.

Multiple causes:: Hot foods and drinks, smoking, allergies, vitamin deficiencies, trauma, just to name a few. However, it is possible that the taste buds are swollen due to an organic underlying cause so it is important to talk to your dentist. Rec.: see general dentist for evaluation and referral if needed.
