A member asked:

I asked once but to make sure, herpes 2 no matter when contracted, even recently, is not likely to be passed to you baby through c-section right?

Right: Hsv2 , if it is active at the time of labor is best treated with a c/s to avoid transmission to the baby which can be devastating. Most providers are treating their patients with hsv2 with suppression during the last trimester.

It decreases risk: Having a c-section drastically reduces the risk of passing a genital herpes infection to the baby versus having the baby via natural birth.

Correct: If you contracted herpes while pregnant, your child can have neonatal herpes passed through the placenta. However, if the infection is old, this will not happen. You can pass herpes to the child through the vaginal canal. Since a c-section avoids the vaginal canal, you cannot pass the herpes 2 virus via a c-section.
