A member asked:

My wife went to a women's health doctor and was prescribed sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160. is it safe to take if pregnant or trying to conceive?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

TMP/SMX: Animal studies have shown fetotoxicity and teratogenicity. No controlled data in human pregnancy. Both drugs cross the placenta. In 186 pregnancies, the mother received either placebo or tmp-smx in a retrospective study. The incidence of congenital abnormalities was 4.5% with placebo and 3.3% with tmp-smx. No abnormalities were reported in women who were treated in the first trimester.
