It's complicated: Valium (; other benzos) r wonderful medications for treating anxiety in the short term. They r potentially addictive, but most people who take them develop physical dependence w/o developing addiction, with addiction best understood as the compulsive use in progressively larger amounts even at the cost of other things in life. If after 2 yrs u still struggle with anxiety, a psych eval is worthwhil.

Valium: More psychotropic medications (like valium and others) are prescribed by primary care physicians than by psychiatrists. Sometimes patients don't want to see psychiatrists; sometimes insurance companies restrict care; and sometimes not enough psychiatrists are available. Still, psychiatrists are extensively trained to treat mental health conditions and are suited to help with your problem.
