Diet and pregnancy: Artificial sweeteners should probably not be used in excess during pregnancy. There are no definitive studies of risks or safety - however, the currently available artificial sweetening products are generally considered safe when used in moderation during pregnancy. You should observe a well balanced diet during your pregnancy - there are numerous sources of guidance for diet in pregnancy.

Many times normal: Diabetes of pregnancy is a condition screened for with a one hour sugar test, generally done around 7 months of pregnancy. Pregnant women can develop 'leaky' kidneys and spill some sugar in their urine but this does not mean they have diabetes of pregnancy.
A 33-year-old member asked:

Is sugar in my urine at my first prenatal doctor visit a sign of diabetes?

Maybe: While the presence of sugar in urine can be a sign of diabetes, in pregnancy it's often due to recent intake of sugar containing or high carbohydrate food. The resulting spike in blood sugar often spills into the urine. Nevertheless it's good to be checked earlier for gestational diabetes if this recurs.
A 21-year-old member asked:

How do I check my blood sugar levels?

Doctor: It is important to check fasting blood/plasma glucose. You should eat a normal diet and be fasting for at-least 8 hours. You should have your doctor arrange a test at a reputable lab. Blood/plasma glucose levels drop on storage of blood, so blood should be tested immediately. Finger stick tests with glucometers are not comparable to plasma glucose done is a lab.
