Those black boxes: Contain rodent poison typically not pesticides. A common rodent poison is actually warfarin which we actually use to thin patients blood and prevent clots. Obviously if you give a rat a lot of it, it will bleed to death. As long as you don't pick up the box and eat the poison inside you will be just fine.

Poisons: Some "pesticides" are quite poisonous and others are safe for humans. However, I would stay away from rat poison. Don't ingest it and best not to touch it if you don't have to.
