Can be normal: Spotting is very common in early pregnancy. Sometimes can occur as the embryo is implanting into the endometrium, but it can also be a warning sign of a miscarriage. You need to have a sonogram done, and an exam. But most likely, it's a normal part of the pregnancy. Your doctor will also check for any infections.
