Maybe or maybe not: Very dark black bowel movements that smell badly can be a sign of bleeding. Other causes of dark bowel movements are medications, iron, pepto bismol, (bismuth subsalicylate) etc.

Maybe: Digested blood from the upper GI tract is usually black, marroon and or tarry/loose in consistency. If you think you may be having GI blood loss you should always see your doctor for evaluation. There are simple tests which can be done on stool to evaluate for the presence of blood. Anytime you have copious amounts of black tarry stool or bright blood in stool seek immediate evaluation.
