A member asked:

Is it appropriate for an orthopedist to treat outside their specialty? if they do, could it not present problems if the injury is problematic?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe: All ortho specialists 1st complete a general ortho residency, which qualifies that doc to treat essentially all musculoskeletal problems. Assuming the doc is board certified, he/she has taken written ; verbal tests to confirm this knowledge/ability. So, basic injuries may be adequately treated by a specialist in another area. The prudent doc refers complex injuries to other specialists.
