Why is it that intervertebral discs usually herniate in the posterolateral direction?

Due to ligament: The posterior longitudinal ligament which keeps the discs in place usually decreases in size in the low back spine area. This decrease in size allows the sides of the discs to have less reinforcement which results in the herniations to occur in those directions, typically posterolaterally.
