Several reasons: The sinuses and upper mucus membrane produce over a liter of fluid a day. Sometimes these secretions are volumous or thicker as seen in allergy or infection Clear color tends to point toward allergy. Post nasal drip causes this fluid to well up and thus you cough it out.
