Most over 60.: Lung cancers usually take several years to develop. Cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor, although a few patients with lung cancers are never smokers. Two out of three people diagnosed with lung cancer are over age 60. In my practice, I have seen rare examples of younger patients (in their thirties) diagnosed with lung cancer. Disease onset is specific to each patient.
