What should happen: Is that the individual goes to a specialized wound center for evaluation and treatment. If not, and depending upon where the wound is located and the control of their diabetes, serious and life-threatening infections and/or gangrene followed by amputation could occur. Get this taken care of soon no matter how small the wound is. Get some expert advice and treatment.
