Avoid foods that cau: Heartburn is pain in the chest which is caused by stomach acid refluxing or traveling up the esophagus, which is your 'food tube'. Decreasing fatty foods, caffeine, peppermint, spicy foods may help. Avoid eating a large meal before lying down to sleep. Elevate the head of your bed helps, as well as taking antacids and over the counter medications designed to reduce stomach acid.

Lifestyle Changed: Weight loss is the most effective prevention. Do not eat meals within 4 hours of bedtime. Avoid overly tight belts or clothing. Raise the head of your bed at least 3 inches. Using multiple pillows to prop your head up at night can actually increase pressure on your abdomen and worsen heartburn. Avoid coffee and caffeinated beverages.
