Methotrexate: The most effective oral medication for moderate to severe psoriasis is methotrexate. Prednisone has too many side effects for chronic use in psoriasis.

There are many new treatments for psoriasis including injectables. But for scalp psoriasis there are many topical treatments available including Taclonex scalp, dermasmoothe FS oil, and Tazarotene. I use combination therapy and get really good results without the risk of oral or injectable medication

Inflammation: Psoriasis is an inflammatory disorder. Inflammation can cause itching symptoms. Other than the prescribed topical steroids that reduce inflammation, i find that oral antihistamines such as zyrtec or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) help.

Sometimes: Occasionally an uncommon form of psoriasis is guttate psoriasis which is small red patches scattered on the body. This can be assocated with a strep infection. It is important to treat with low dose antibiotics for weeks to eradicate the strep and the guttate psoriasis may go into remission for extended periods of time.

Psoriasis: Differentiating scalp psoriasis from scalp sebohheic dermatitis can be difficult. Although treatments for mild cases are similar, oral immunosuppressants may be required to treat scalp psoiasis. Step one, see a dermatologist if otc medications are not working. Psoriasis is more likely if: rash extends below the scalp-line of if rash is also present on elbows, kneees, hands and feet.

I obsessivly pick sores on my hands and scalp, why can't I stop even though it hurts? Is it anxiety or something else?

Something else: If it 's not irritation (itching) then you probably have dermatillomania, which is just a fancy way of saying you obsessively pick at yourself. This is thought to be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder & may improve on an ssri antidepressant. Cognitive-behavioral therapy might also help. You could also try wearing a hat & gloves (kidding). Anxiety makes it worse.
