Can you tell me what to expect with someone who has got their first mammogram in their 50's?

Multiple positions: If this is your first time for a mammogram be aware that your mammographer likely has a lot of experience with the technique. Let them know that this is new for you. Aside from having to forego some modesty during the exam, the technique usually involves more than one position. Also, if you have breast implants this will be an important fact to share with the mammograher.

First mammogram: The tech will position your breast on the flat surface of the mammo machine. A flat compression plate will be slowly lowered to compress the breast. This may be mildly uncomfortable, but shouldn't be painful. During the few seconds the breast is compressed, the X-ray will be taken. The beam passes from the top, thru the breast. 2 views of each breast will be taken for screening.
