At least 24 hours: Smoking after oral surgery can greatly increase the chances of complications like post-op pain and infection. It will delay healing thus prolong your recovery time. You must wait at least 24 hours at the minimum or expect problems. May be a good time to quit the bad and unhealthy habit.

Delayed healing: Is possible if you smoke after extractions. The body doesn't know whether to lay down reparative tissues or fight a foreign body reaction caused from micro-particles caused by smoke inhalation into the oral cavity. Also nicotine acts as a vasoconstrictor on the blood vessels in the area thereby reducing the healing response.
