Can be serious: Barrett's esophagus is a potentially serious complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease. It can lead to esophageal cancer in a small percentage of patients. Patients with barrett 's should have regular endoscopies with multiple biopsies to determine whether or not there are atypical cells. If there are, intervention with endoscopic resection or ablation or surgical resection should be done.
