A member asked:

I don't have the slightest clue as to what a base excess is or how it works. is a base excess of 8 mmol/l less than -5.0?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Base Excess: Base excess is usually calculated as part of an evaluation of electrolyte balance in the blood. It is useful in determining the presence of respiratory vs metabolic acid/base balance. Many conditions such as diabetes, COPD and lung prob, kidney disease, certain poisonings and others can affect the base excess. The number obtained is useful in making a diagnosis or determining treatment success.
