Acid problem: Either too much acid is produced or the acid is not handled right. You may have reflux from the stomach into the esophagus by an incompetent esophageal sphincter, or by a hiatus hernia. Or there may be irritation of the stomach lining leading to discomfort. Spicy foods, medications, overweight, smoking, alcohol can all predispose to this condition, or make it worse.
