Same thing: The american board of thoracic surgery certifies cardiothoracic surgery training. Cardiac surgery and cardiothoracic surgery are synonyms. Some thoracic surgeons do not operate on the heart.

Similar: They are very simulate and frequently the same. This is really more of a name game. Thoracic surgery is surgery for every thing in the chest. Thoracic also frequently means only lung, esophageal or other non cardiac surgery. Cardiac surgery is heart surgery. A cardiothoracic surgeon typically does both cardiac and thoracic surgery. A cardiovascular surgeon does cardiac and vascular surgery.
