Not typical: Stabing pains are not typical symptoms of carpal tunnel or neuropathy. They typically present with tingling, numbness, and perasthesias. Often times associated with weakness, lack of coordination, and muscle wasting. The numbness is in the thumb index long and half the ring fingers with carpal tunnel. Patients are often awoken at night with numbness in the median nerve distribution.

Get x-rays first: Could be arthritic or tenosynovial type pain. See a hand surgeon ; get wrist x-rays. If still a concern re nerve compression or neuropathy then will need an emg/nct.

Good result: If splinting helps, that is a clue that you have carpal tunnel syndrome. Splinting does not help neuropathy. Do you have the symptoms on one side? Neuropathy normally affects both sides, and normally the feet. The best test for these conditions however is nerve conduction testing.
