Cold symptoms: Colds as we call them are caused by a variety of viral infections. Most of them cause irritation of the linings of the nose and that irritation causes sneezing (a mechanism the body has to try to get rid of nasal irritants.) the virus is in the body well before you feel it. The first symptom may be a sneeze, which means the virus is causing enough irritation for the body to try to get rid of it.

Viral uri: Scratchy or sore throats are often the first signs of a head cold coming on and this is often followed by sneezing and nasal mucus formation. In other words, sneezing isn't the cause of the cold but an early symptom of one.
