Depends: If you are single, abstinence. If you are married then always wear a condom, but do not expose your partner during known outbreaks.

Avoid the sores: In order to not catch the herpes virus, one must be able to talk about herpes with his potential sexual partner. He must ask her if she has had herpes sores. If so, she can ask her doctor for prophylactic (preventive) anti-viral medication. The couple can also not have sex during the appearance of a sore, and for a week or so after the sore heals, to be extra safe. Using condoms helps prevention.

Avoid people with it: This flippant answer highlights how hard it is to avoid herpes. In the US, certain studies show 95% or more people are infected. Why? HSV-2 (genital herpes), is only one of at least 8 clinically important viruses in the herpesvirus family. Other viruses-varicella zoster, Epstein Barr virus (mono), cytomegalovirus, fifth's disease, humanherpesvirus-6, and others, are all in this family.
