Size or obstruction: Small stones can pass on their own ; often are very painful. Stones larger than 5mm in diameter can obstruct ; potentially damage kidney. Larger stones may require ureteroscopic laser breakup ; removal, extra-corporal shock-wave lithotripst (eswl) or percutaneous nephro-lithotomy (pcnl) you should also have a metabolic stone work-up 2c if u need any medication to prevent future stones.
