Alt treatments: There are alternatives to joint replacement. Most joints can be improved with an arthroscopy, which is a camera and an instrument placed through very small incisions on the skin. They can be used to clean out the joint and help repair damaged cartilage, which can help improve the pain. In some joints, fusion (where 2 bones become 1) is a valid option, including the ankle and big toe joints.
