A member asked:

Can you tell me if i've given up drinking. will the weight gain caused by stopping smoking be cancelled out by the weight loss due to not drinking?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It could: Congrats on quitting two bad habits. Weight gain after stopping smoking is rarely more than 5-10 pounds, and I have not seen many patients complain of weight loss after stopping alcohol (since they usually just substituted alcohol for other calorie sources). The health gains from quitting both will more than outweigh the risks of a little weight gain, and you can work on losing those pounds too.
