Smoking & lungs: The mucociliary elevator mechanism usually cleans out toxins of cigarette smoke within eight weeks from quitting smoking. But the damage done to the lungs, as far as your risk for emphysema and cancer, is permanent.

Once in the tar and : Nicotine residue remains in the lungs. The cilia will try to clear out any debris, but most of it appears to be permanently changed. If you ever saw the Body World display featured in many Museums of Science and Industry, you would see how black the lungs became after years of chain smoking. If you just started to smoke & have hardly smoked, it's potentially reversible. Otherwise, its difficult.
