See below: An approach to the diseased disc is made through the front of the neck. The disc is removed and the nerves and spinal cord are freed from impingement at that level. A spacer is placed in the disc space and can be made of a variety of materials. A plate can be applied to potentially increase the rigidity of the system. Over 8-12 weeks bone grows across the spacer resulting in a fused segment.
