A member asked:

Is it a fact that once amebiasis strikes you it never leaves your system?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: Amebiasis can be treated and eliminated. Amebic colitis is first treated with a nitroimidazole derivative (metronidazole being the only one available in the United States), followed by a luminal (phenobarbital) agent to eradicate colonization (iodoquinol, paromomycin, diloxanide furoate).
