Scarlet fever Sx's: May include red, sore throat with red tongue which may have a white coating, headaches, nausea, vomiting ; a rash that feels like sandpaper ; is red. Swollen glands, fever ; generalized aching also occur. Scarlet fever needs to be treated with antibiotics to prevent complications.

I see cases yearly: Before antibiotics SF was a truly scary disease. Weeks of high temperature & pealing red skin rash were often followed by major complications. Today it is easily treated with antibiotics. The rash generally starts within 12hrs of a fever with a strain of strep that can make the rash toxin. Treatment kills enough strep to minimize the rash; shorten the illness. It is called scarletina today
