Cipro/Levaquin: The strain of salmonella typhi needs to be tested for antibiotic sensitivity. For uncomplicated typhoid fever with a sensitive strain the best treatment is oral Cipro (ciprofloxacin) or levaquin. Alternatives are amoxicillin, septra or azithromycin. Quinolone risistant strains are best treated with Azithromycin or IV ceftriaxone.
