Tracheitis: This type of nonproductive cough may follow a viral upper respiratory tract infection and is usually due to residual irritation in the windpipe rather than continuing infection. If there is no fever, sweats, chills, wheezing or true shortness of breath, then taking a mild cough suppressant is the treatment as the more you cough, the more you irritate the trachea. Your md can check you as needed.
