Well, major : Depression is actually part of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which there are periods of depression as well as periods of elevated energy/ mood (mania or hypomania).

Not exactly: Technically, major depressive disorder stands on its own, and differs from bipolar depression even though the symptoms could be similar when the bipolar person is depressed. Longitudinal history over time is important in making the distinction, as the bipolar person will have an episode of either hypomania or mania that someone with major depressive disorder alone will not have.
