Alternative to bipolar medication while pregnant, what can i take?

Options: Only fda approved treatment for a phase of bipolar disorder with a pregnancy category of b (no evidence of birth defects in animal studies) is lamotragine. Lithium, valproic acid, Carbamazepine and lamotragine are known to cause birth defects and are only used of other options are not available. Many options are pregnancy category c (risk defects can be excluded) i.e. Some antipsychotics.

Coordinate Drs.: With this diagnosis, you would need to see your ob/gyn and psychiatrist and request they coordinate with you about the risks and benefits of the pregnancy. In general, there are psychotropics that are relatively safe staring in the second trimester forward. Take care.
