Rough ; dull luster: When we sandblast something (such as a tooth) it leaves a rough surface with a dull luster. I'm not sure why a dentist would say that, nor the cause. You should ask the dentist for a more thorough explanation.

Pitted enamel: Healthy tooth enamel is smooth and shiny. Acid eats away at the enamel surface causing pitting and the enamel then looks dull. The same thing would happen glass that was subjected to a stream of water or air mixed with sand, a process known as sand blasting. Your dentist is telling you that your tooth enamel has been damaged and is dull and pitted.

Correct: Dr schneider is correct. We often see dull white pitted scars next to braces when patients have been less than diligent with oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. For very mild decalcification remineralization techniques are available. Moderate to severe decalcification requires restorations..
