Pars defect: Refers to the pars interarticularis which is the bone connecting the inferior and superior facets which is anterior to the lamina and posterior to the pedicle. There are two per vertebrae. Lumbar pars defects can occur in young athletes or from stress fractures secondary to chronic arthritic changes or sudden severe trauma.
