Expired IUD: A copper iud should be placed before it expires. No doctor would place an expired iud. Once placed, it will be effective for at least 10 years. Since you are 18, your iud should be working fine. If you have questions, ask your doctor who placed the iud.

10 years: The copper iud last up to ten years. Since you are 18 it seems unlikely that you would have had it in longer than ten years.
