Metal allergy: He has likely developed a contact allergy to the metal in the ring with nickel being high on the list. At times, soap may get trapped under the ring and cause an irritant reaction as well. You may try coating the inner part of the ring periodically with clear nail polish to see it this works. If not, you will have to spring for a more expensive one. (remove ring when hand washing).
