A member asked:

Can sepsis be caused by fungal infection?

Yes: Sepsis, an infection that spreads through the blood to cause major damage to various organs in the body, can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or any other bad germ. Fungal infections are more likely in a person who has a weak immune system or in a person who has had another serious illness for a while.

Yes: Sepsis is the body's generalized inflammatory response to a specific infection. The infection can be in the lung, the blood, the kidney/bladder, or anywhere else. The infection could be bacterial or fungal. It is the body's inflammatory response that defines sepsis (and septic shock), not the infection itself.
