A member asked:

Due to poor weight gain, developmental delays, sweating - my nephew is being tested for cystic fibrosis- how long does one live with this?

Cystic fibrosis: Highly variable and dependent upon whether there is complete penetrance, the management, and so on. These days have seen CF patients live much much longer than previously and with new therapies developing they may be quite treatable.

Adulthood/screen: The CF sweat test is a collection of sweat performed to screen for cf. CF is a genetic disease and involves a mutation in a gene called cftr. The disease can cause poor weight gain, respiratory infections, sinusitis, pancreatitis, GI problems. Screening tests such as the sweat test may detect cf. The life expectancy has greatly improved and many patients live well into their 40s and 50s.
