Rectal spasms: There are multiple possible causes. Spasms of the muscles in your anal sphincter or rectum can cause intense pain that resolves. Extreme pain is common with fissures, or small tears in the anus or distal rectum. If these are frequent or recurrent, talk with your doctor - a proctologist or gastroenterologist can examine you and determine if there is a tear, or hemorrhoids, or other problem.
