Virus: Most viral infections of the upper respiratory tract are self limited and resolve after 5to10 days. Treatment is only symptomatic as antibiotics are not effective for these infections. However if symptoms worsen or cough deepens with ongoing fever, sweats, chills antibiotics may be necessary and an examination for possible pneumonia is warranted.
