Self view: Body image is what you think others see. In the us, many of us have poor body images--too fat or skinny, too tall or short, this or that body part too small or large. A fun test of this is to get a big scroll of paper and try to draw an outline your body, then back up to it have & have someone trace your actual outline. Men routinely draw shoulders wider than they are, women, bigger waists.

Degrees of distress: Poor body image is a general term that can mean many things. Body dysmorphia is the most serious and is a preoccupation with a perceived flaw in a body part which is not present or exaggerated. Body image distortion is similar but to a lesser extent and can relate to the entire body. Body image distress is the emotional pain caused by the perception.
