Yes, usually: Bacterial pneumonia varies by the type of bacteria as does viral pneumonia. In general, however, both present with a fever, shortness of breath, and a cough.

Yes: Bacterial & viral pneumonias can be very hard to distinguish on the basis of symptoms alone. Your doctor may order some blood tests, cultures & xrays to help make that determination. Treatment should be prescribed by your doctor based on your clinical history, examination & test results. It is also important to remember that bacteria can sometimes cause secondary infection in viral illnesses.
