Not very: It's a recognized risk factor of limited clinical utility. In patients who are otherwise healthy with no evidence of atherosclerosis and in whom the estimated 10 year risk of an event is in the range of 7.5%, it can help determine if that individual should receive a statin. Beyond that limited role, it's not helpful.
