It can help mask: The pain, but will not correct the underlying issues. Keep moving, do not lay in bed as this will make back aches worse. I would not recommend an opioid for a general back ache. If it is not contraindicated due to your health, i would think nsaids way before i would consider opioids.

Usually: Hydrocodone usually helps with all pains. The problem is, it's not helping to solve the cause of the back pain. The other problem is most everyone develops tolerance and eventually needs more and more narcotic pain medications. I'd have to suggest someone get a full, proper evaluation by a spine specialist such as a pm;r physician with interventional pain training (or other specialist).
