Please help! what is the difference between a protruding discs and a herniated disc?

Herniated disc: A protruding disc is basically just a bulge outward of a disc. A herniated disc is where a fragment of the disc has ruptured through a thick membrane and compresses a spinal nerve. In both cases you can have sciatica pain.
