Several causes: Optic nerves can swell from induced pressure due to elevated pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid (papilledema). They can also swell from local inflammation (neuritis) or tumores in the nerve and certain types of trauma. An ophthalmologist can make this diagnosis and set a course to treat the problem.
