A member asked:

Is it true that a spleenectomy is more dangerous as a child. why?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: In children, having a functional spleen is important for the development of long-term immunity to certain bacteria. If you lose or have to have your spleen removed early, you may be more susceptible to these bacteria. If the spleen is lost when you are an adult, however, you have already built up immunity to most of these organisms.
